1880 House Renovation

With this full-gut renovation over four floors, the homeowners bring modern design to their quaint 1880 New England farmhouse.  The renovation dramatically transforms the interior to fit their lifestyle and modern aesthetic.  Improving the size and proportions of rooms and eliminating redundant circulation spaces further increases the home’s functionality.

As is common in late 19th century New England homes, the first floor originally consisted of a compartmentalized set of rooms and a narrow entry hall.  The renovation removes two obsolete chimneys and many of the interior walls to create an open plan. The new modern kitchen, anchored by a large square island, opens up to the flexible dining room and the living room is expanded.  The rear mudroom and full bathroom are reconfigured to make more efficient use of the compact footprint.

On the second floor, a small rear addition over an existing one-story bump-out adds enough square footage to create a primary bedroom with an en-suite bathroom.  The renovation right sizes the rooms to have better proportions for the bedrooms, add new large closets, and create a more inviting second-floor hall.  In the primary bedroom, the additional height of the cathedral ceiling combined with the large windows and skylight give the room an airy and spacious feeling of retreat.
